Journey's ninth album, Raised on Radio, was released in May of 1986 on the Columbia Records label.
Following their two most successful albums, "Escape" (1981) and "Frontiers" (1983), lead singer Steve Perry, after receiving much of the credit for Journey's success, decided to take more control over the band's direction. Because of this, original Journey member and bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were fired from the band. The two were replaced by various studio musicians for the recording of "Raised on Radio": Randy Jackson (bass) and Larrie Londin (drums). Smith did record two tracks with Journey on the CD before his ousting from Journey, which Perry regrets doing to this day.
Due to Perry's larger influence in the band, much of the album has a feel similar to his solo album "Street Talk". However, the classic Journey sound can still be heard on songs like "Girl Can't Help It", "Suzanne", and the long time concert staple "Be Good to Yourself". The album closer and ballad "Why Can't This Night Go on Forever", similar to that of "Faithfully", also achieved minor chart success.
Following the conclusion of the tour, Steve Perry, having grown tired of the constant touring and overcoming the death of his mother and the collapse of a six-year relationship with Sherrie Swafford, walked away from the band, ending Journey's ride at the top, and not to return until the mid 90's for the reunion of the classic lineup for "Trial By Fire". Perry himself took an extended break from recording, not to return again until 1994 (although Perry did work on a previous CD in 1989, that CD project was shelved).
