Radio Nova was a major radio industry milestone in Finland, when it launched in 1997. Nova is the only national commercial broadcaster. It is owned by Alma Media mediagroup. Nova is specialized playing popular music for people aged 25-44 and reading news hourly.
Radio Nova is also a non-commercially run student radio situated and broadcasting in Oslo, Norway, at FM 99,3. The radio is devoted to playing groundbreaking underground music, and consist mostly of volunteered journalists and technicians. Radio Nova went on-air for the first time March 16, 1982, as Norway’s first non-Christian, local radio station. Since then we’ve been providing the people of Oslo with their daily dose of non-commercial radio programming. Radio that’s driven by a core of idealism—practically none of our journalists or technicians receive economic compensation for the work that they do. Radio Nova’s programming is motivated by an enthusiasm for the medium, and a desire to create important, interesting, and challenging radio. Today we broadcast 40.5 hours a week between our 22 programs. In the course of a week at Nova you get to hear everything from provocative, intelligent debates to programs that deal with film, the sciences, literature, music, culture and social questions. On our website you’ll always be updated on upcoming programming a week in advance, and you can also listen to reprises of last week’s programs. Radio Nova has always been known for its music profile. We are proud to keep ourselves educated and to be on the forefront of what’s happening in music. But don’t think we’re limited by that—Nova plays music from all genres: rock, pop, electronica, jazz, hip-hop, you-name-it, as long as it’s good. And those who decide which music is good are our own experienced music journalists. Not the charts or the big labels. Together with the rest of Norway’s student radio stations we have kicked-off a shared endeavor to further the cause of independent/alternative music: a national student radio play-list. The student stations in the three biggest university towns (Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim) have in cooperation put together the list, but with the expectation it will be played by smaller student stations throughout the country. We make radio for people who want to listen to radio, and play music for people who like music. If you want background-noise, buy a vacuum cleaner.
