Queen is the first rock album by British band Queen, originally released in 1973. The album was recorded at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea, United Kingdom. It was engineeed by Roy Thomas Baker (as Roy Baker), Mike Stone, Ted Sharpe, and Dave Hentschel.
This album consists of heavy metal music, influenced by Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, whilst lyrically it is about such diverse subjects as a mythical fairy king to Jesus. In this album Mercury came in as the dominant songwriter, composing five of the ten tracks, and showing his particularly complex style. May contributed four songs, and Taylor one, in which he sang.
The album was recorded over a long period of time, in contrast with many debut albums; this was due to the fact that the band used the recording studio during off-hours to save money.
Included as the last song on the album is a snippet of "Seven Seas of Rhye", the full version of which appeared on the next album by Queen, Queen II.
Bassist John Deacon is named "Deacon John" on the album. The other members of the group used to call him that, and he agreed to the switch on the album. After it was released he asked that he be referred to by his proper name.
