Puppet Masters
|
Puppet Masters is the nickname of the people running an online game or creating puzzles based on fictional characters in an alternative reality. They may or may not be known ahead of time.
The birth of this genre occurred in April 2001 with The Beast, an alternate reality game created for the promotion of the film A.I. directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Stanley Kubrick's unfinished project.
The discovery of this mystery, and the difficulty of the puzzles, led to the spontaneous creation of Cloudmakers.org (http://www.Cloudmakers.org).When the game finally ended, the people behind it—nicknamed the puppet masters, as the plot contained Pinocchio references—revealed themselves as a small team.
The name also refers to Robert A. Heinlein's novel The Puppet Masters and the motion picture based on Heinlein classic about a super spy battling an outer space menace.
A mysterious hacker who has the code name Project 2501 : Puppet Master appears in Ghost in the Shell using what is called ghost hacking
