Vanuatu has been divided into six provinces since 1994:
From 1985 to 1994 it was divided into eleven island regions:
- Ambae and Maéwo (capital Longana)
- Ambrym (capital Eas)
- Banks and Torres (capital Sola)
- Éfaté (capital Port Vila)
- Épi (capital Ringdove)
- Malekula (capital Lakatoro)
- Paama (capital Liro)
- Pentecost (capital Loltong)
- Santo and Malo (capital Luganville)
- Shepherd (capital Morua)
- Taféa (capital Isangel)
From about 1968 until 1985, Vanuatu was divided into four areas:
