Princeton is a town located in Worcester County, Massachusetts.

Princeton was created in 1759, out of land that was once part of Rutland. In 1810, it annexed a piece of Hubbardston, and in 1870, it annexed a piece of Westminster.

It is bordered on the east by Sterling and Leominster; on the north by Westminster; on the west by Hubbardston and Rutland; on the south by Rutland and Holden.

The preeminent landmark within Princeton is Mount Wachusett, which straddles the line between Princeton and Westminster but the entrance to which is within Princeton. According to tradition, in 1675, Mary Rowlandson was ransomed upon "Redemption Rock," now within the town of Princeton, by King Philip.

As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,353.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.8 km² (35.8 mi²). 91.8 km² (35.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,353 people, 1,166 households, and 959 families residing in the town. The population density is 36.5/km² (94.6/mi²). There are 1,196 housing units at an average density of 13.0/km² (33.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.75% White, 0.30% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,166 households out of which 41.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.7% are married couples living together, 5.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% are non-families. 13.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 29.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $80,993, and the median income for a family is $84,300. Males have a median income of $60,888 versus $39,494 for females. The per capita income for the town is $32,232. 4.4% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
