Powergen was an electric generating company in the United Kingdom. It was formed from the power generation arm of the old Central Electricity Generating Board when the industry was privatized in the early '90s.
Powergen has expanded considerably by acquiring East Midlands Electricity, TXU, Midlands Electricity and others. In 2001 Powergen was itself bought by major European energy company E.ON.
Its headquarters are in Coventry at Westwood Business Park. It also has offices in Nottingham (from the old East Midlands Electricity) and Ipswich (from TXU). There are other regional offices and many power generation sites.
As is now common in this industry, Powergen also sell Gas and telephone products. Powergen are also committed to promoting cleaner energy solutions and energy saving measures in the home, even sending out free energy saving light bulbs to new customers.
Powergen was one of the first energy companies in the UK to take the logical step of combining gas and electric bills where customers take both services.
It is likely that the Powergen branding will be slowly phased out and replaced with the E.ON brand for consistency across Europe.
It sponsors rugby union's Powergen Cup, the rugby league Powergen Challenge Cup, and also rugby league's top match officials.
