Portland is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,502.
The Town of Portland, on the shore of Lake Erie, was incorporated in 1813.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 88.8 km² (34.3 mi²). 88.7 km² (34.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.
The New York State Thruway crosses the northern part of the town.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,502 people, 1,655 households, and 1,161 families residing in the town. The population density is 62.0/km² (160.6/mi²). There are 2,096 housing units at an average density of 23.6/km² (61.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 82.93% White, 12.05% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.51% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 8.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,655 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the town the population is spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 16.2% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 140.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 148.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $30,909, and the median income for a family is $37,006. Males have a median income of $27,464 versus $21,636 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,881. 11.2% of the population and 8.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- West Portland -- On Route 20 near the west town line.
