Portage Lakes, Ohio

Portage Lakes is a census-designated place located in Summit County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 9,870. It is not a municipality. The Portage Lakes area encompasses portions of Franklin Township and Coventry Township which are wholly situated within Summit County. The city of Green is adjacent to the southeast and Akron on the north. The Portage Lakes of the area include but are not limited to Turkeyfoot Lake, Nimisila Reservoir, Mud Lake, and Long Lake. The lakes are connected by a series of "channels". There is a Portage Lakes State Park with boat launching ramps and seasonal beach swimming.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 21.1 km² (8.2 mi²). 17.0 km² (6.6 mi²) of it is land and 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.49% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,870 people, 4,195 households, and 2,751 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 580.0/km² (1,502.0/mi²). There are 4,491 housing units at an average density of 263.9/km² (683.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.79% White, 0.57% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,195 households out of which 24.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.6 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,698, and the median income for a family is $52,384. Males have a median income of $37,250 versus $26,279 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,267. 5.0% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 8.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
