1970s
The 1975-1980 Sunbird was a version of the Chevrolet Monza RWD coupe on the GM H platform.
1980s and early 1990s
The 1984 Sunbird is a compact car that was first produced as the J2000 in 1981. In 1984, the name was dropped and became known as the Sunbird. Production under this name was continued until 1994.
The Pontiac Sunbird is built on the General Motors J-body platform which it shares with sibling brands under various names.
The Sunbird depending on the model year came with one of these engines:
- 1.8 L OHV I4
- 1.8 L OHV I4 (Fuel injected)
- 2.0 L OHC I4
- 2.0 L OHV I4 Turbo
- 2.3 L I4 DOHC Quad4
- 2.4 L I4 DOHC Dual Cam or Twin Cam
- 2.8 L 60° OHV V6
- 1991-1994 3.1 L (191 in³) 60° V6
After 1994, the Sunbird was replaced by the Sunfire. It could be suspected that this was done to avoid possible confusion with the Firebird, which was another model Pontiac produced.
