Plattdüütsch is a name for the regional language varieties:
- Low Saxon language
- East Low German language.
East of the Elbe, the English name is Low Saxon. West of the Elbe it is East Low German. The official language code is, according to ISO 693-2, nds. Since 1998, Plattdüütsch has been recognized by the European bureau for minority languages.
These Germanic language varieties are spoken mainly in northern Germany, southern Denmark and eastern Netherlands. Also, there are some speakers in the coastal areas of Poland, and immigrant communities in north America, mainly in Canada.
