The chain operates 1172 stores under the names Pier 1 Imports, The Pier, Cargokids, and Pier 1 Kids in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Pier 1 Imports also has an international merchandising deal with Sears.

Famous spokespeople for the company, seen largely in broadcast commercials, include Cheers alumni Kirstie Alley and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy's Thom Filicia.
The company regularly rotates their fragrance (candle, incense and room spray) collections and has several distinct flavors such as tuscan herb, rose and "blendables" - more than one complementary flavor together.
