Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a U.S. National Lakeshore on the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA. It extends for about 15 miles (24 km) along the shore and covers 73,236 acres (318 sq. km). The park offers spectacular scenery of the hilly shoreline between Munising, Michigan and Grand Marais, Michigan, natural bridges, waterfalls, and sand dunes. Near Munising one has a view of Grand Island, which is a National Recreation Area and not a part of the park, but part of the view nonetheless. Pictured Rocks derives its name from its sandstone cliffs that have been naturally sculptured into formations that resemble castle turrets and human profiles, among others. In the 2003 fiscal year, the park received 382,264 visitors. Pictured Rocks was the first officially-designated National Lakeshore in the United States and was authorized in 1966. It is governed by the National Parks Service.
