Phosphite
|
The phosphite ion is a polyatomic ion with phosphorus as its central atom. Its formula is PO33-.
The acid of the phosphite ion is phosphorous acid (H3PO3). Other names are orthophosphorous acid, dihydroxyphosphine oxide, phosphorus trihydroxide and trihydroxyphosphine. Phosphorous acid is a diprotic acid, since the hydrogen bonded directly to the central phosphorus atom is not ionizable.
Organophosphorus compounds called phosphite esters have the formula (RO)3P. They are prepared from phosphorus trichloride and alcohols.
