Philodendron Schott 1832 , is a large genus of flowering plants from the arum family (Araceae), consisting of 700 or more species. Only Anthurium is still larger with 600-800 species, or even possibly 1,000. But taxonomically it is still poorly known with many undescribed species.
The name derives from the Greek philo or "love" and dendron or "tree".
A Philodendron grows in most diverse habitats in tropical America and the West Indies. Most occur in humid tropical forests, but equally in swamps, on river banks, roadsides and rock outcrops. Because of its abundance and showy leaves, it is also the most conspicuous in the neotropics.
This genus consists of shrubs and small trees. But most are evergreen epiphytic plants with aerial roots, growing by climbing up a host tree.
The stem has a succession of leaves, in some species very elegant, in others robust. Between each inflorescence, there are up to five leaves. These leaves can attain an impressing dimension or deep-cut lobes. They are usually uniformly green, but sometimes with attractive colors, such as white, pink or red.
The apical inflorescence is mainly solitary, rarely several. The petioles have long sheaths, encircling the basal stem. The inconspicuous flowers lack petals.
Typical domesticated Philodendrons, such as p. selloum, have heart-shaped leaves with crenelations - giving the leaves a finger-like appearance.
All parts of the plant are poisonous, due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals.
