Phi Slamma Jamma
|
Phi Slamma Jamma was the nickname given to the University of Houston's Cougar basketball team from 1982 to 1984. This team was coached by the legendary Guy V. Lewis. They were especially known for their dunking skills and getting the ball to the basket in a hurry. The name was coined by Tommy Bonk, a writer for the Houston Post newspaper.
The team lost a close championship game against the N.C. State Wolfpack team in 1983, by a score of 54-52. The Georgetown Hoyas team defeated the Cougars in a championship game the next year.
The team included:
- Benny Anders
- Clyde "the Glide" Drexler
- Eric Dickens
- Alvin Franklin
- Reid "Spot" Gettys
- Larry "Mr. Mean" Micheaux
- Akeem "the Dream" Olajuwon
- Michael Young
- Dave Rose
In 1994, Olajuwon & Drexler later reunited on the Houston Rockets team when Drexler was traded from the Portland TrailBlazers. The Rockets went on to win back to back NBA championships and earned Houston the nickname "Clutch City".
