Perry (town), New York

Perry is a town located in Wyoming County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,654. The town is named after Commodore Oliver H. Perry.

The Town of Perry was established in 1814. Perry is also the name of a village within the town. The town is on the eastern border of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.8 km² (36.6 mi²). 94.2 km² (36.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.60% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,654 people, 1,905 households, and 1,339 families residing in the town. The population density is 70.6/km² (182.9/mi²). There are 2,084 housing units at an average density of 22.1/km² (57.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 79.23% White, 15.75% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.31% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 8.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,905 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.4% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 40.1% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 168.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 187.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,455, and the median income for a family is $44,743. Males have a median income of $30,880 versus $21,674 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,441. 8.7% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.6% of those under the age of 18 and 1.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Sucker Brook -- A hamlet west of Perry Center on Route 20A.
  • West Perry Center -- A hamlet on the western town line on Route 20A.
