Almost all the ferns in the Pellaeaceae are petrophilic, or rock lovers. Many of them are desert ferns. Many of the species can curl up, appearing dead during dry times, and revive with the coming of moisture.
These ferns bear their sori submarginally, usually with the leaf margin reflexed to form a partial false indusium.
A few species of Pellaea are commonly found in the horticultural trade as foliage ornamental plants, especially Pellaea rotundifolia.
