Pearl River, New York

Pearl River is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) located in Rockland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 15,553.

Pearl River is in the southwest part of the Town of Orangetown.

Pearl River is presently the site of the international headquarters of the Zeta Psi Fraternity of North America Inc. Its location is 15 South Henry Street, Pearl River, NY 10965.

Geography

Pearl River is located at 41°3'50" North, 74°0'37" West (41.063996, -74.010298)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 18.6 km² (7.2 mi²). 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.87% water.

Original Name: Muddy Creek

  • It was renamed in the early 1900's because pearls were found in the river.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 15,553 people, 5,539 households, and 4,209 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 877.9/km² (2,273.2/mi²). There are 5,636 housing units at an average density of 318.1/km² (823.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.13% White, 0.39% African American, 0.05% Native American, 3.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 3.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,539 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% are non-families. 20.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $76,692, and the median income for a family is $91,618. Males have a median income of $58,966 versus $39,452 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $31,417. 3.4% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
