Djibouti is a multiparty republican regime whose current president is Ismail Omar Guelleh. Djibouti is located between Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west, and Somalia to the south. Gelleh is the leader of the country’s one legislative house, the National Assembly. The parliamentary party in power is the Union for Presidential Majority (UMP). The UMP consists of the leading party of the country, the People’s Really for Progress (Gelleh’s Party), the Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy, the National Democratic Party, and the Social Democratic People’s Party.
The Party of Democrat Renewal is one of the opposing parties making up the Union for Democratic Change (UAD). It is joined with the Republican Alliance for Democracy, the Djibouti Party for Development, and the Djibouti Union for Democracy and Justice. The PRD of Djibouti was created with the purpose of forming a national democratic party. The PRD gained popularity at the collapse of the communist bloc and the end of the Cold War. It uses its military power gained through its coalition with the Front for the Restoration of the Unity and Democracy (FRUD) and the Movement for Peace and Reconciliation (MPR). The current leader of PRD is Abdillani Hamariteha.
The PRD was legalized on September 27, 1992, therefore achieving its first victory against the UMP and its president. The goal was for Gelleh to become more flexible by opening the country up to multiple party politics. Parliamentary elections are held on the representation list system every five years. The last parliamentary election were held on January 10, 2003 where the UMP won by 62.7 percent with the UAD losing by 37.3 percent.
