Pan Sonic
|
Panasonic, now called Pan Sonic, is a Finnish electronica group consisting of Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen. They started in 1993 making techno, but later moved to other styles of music, inspired by old Jamaican dub reggae and ska. Their main instrument is a huge synthesizer build by third 'extra' member Jari Lehtinen. This and other custom made instuments are responsible for creating the huming sounds typical to Pan Sonic's music. Lately they also started using samplers and an MPC2000 sequencer.
Pan Sonic are great fans of experimentation and art perfomances and have done exhibitions and sound installations in museums. They also made music for Japanese fashion shows.
In 1998 they changed their name to Pan Sonic after the electronics company Panasonic threatened with legal action.
Pan Sonic is inspired by 1980s industrial music of Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten and Suicide as wel as musique concrète composer Pierre Henry.
