PC Gamer (founded in 1994), is a popular magazine devoted to reviewing new computer games. It features news on developments in the gaming industry, previews of new games, and reviews of the latest popular PC games along with other features. There are two main editions of PC Gamer; the American and the British versions. Both are published by Future Publishing.
There are also numerous local editions that mainly use the materials of one of the two editions, typically the British one. These include a Malaysian edition, a Swedish edition, and a Russian edition.
The PC Gamer mascot Coconut Monkey, an artist's rendering of a colorful monkey character carved out of a coconut, has appeared numerous times in the magazine, often mocking vaporware developers by hawking a fictional game called Gravy Trader, which boasts an ever-more-impressive list of features, yet which never actually comes out.
In the US the magazine has two editions; One edition comes with a CD containing game files; the "solo" edition does not. In the UK the Magazine either has a DVD attached [with the attachment being labeled DVD-gamer] or a Cd [Cd-gamer]. Cover-diskless versions are not sold in the UK.
Circulation
According to MDS (http://www.mdsconnect.com/topcirculation.htm) as of 2003, PC Gamer has a circulation of 309,460 in the United States, making it one of the country's most popular computer magazines. In this regard, it is slightly ahead of competitor Computer Gaming World.
Review system
Reviews are written either by the magazine's editors or by freelancers. For most reviews, a system of percentages is used, usually with a "final verdict" section for high-profile games. The system, from best to worst, is as follows:
- 100%-90% Editor's Choice
- 89%-80% Excellent
- 79%-70% Good
- 69%-60 Above Average
- 59%-50% Merely Okay
- 49%-40% Tolerable
- 39%-0% Don't Bother
