Outcesticide I

Outcesticide I: In Memory of Kurt Cobain is the first in a series of bootlegs albums featuring rare music by the 1990s grunge band Nirvana.

Although it's nearly impossible to measure sales of dubiously-produced bootleg albums, the Outcesticide series is, in all likelihood, the most successful and popular Nirvana bootlegs ever produced. Each of the five albums in the series is comprised of various live, demo, and otherwise unreleased recordings. All of the albums in the Outcesticide series were released by Blue Moon Records; However, due to the series' popularity, various knock-off and copycat products have been released by those wishing to cash in.

Below is the tracklisting for the first Outcesticide compilation; For the other albums in the series, see Outcesticide II, Outcesticide III, Outcesticide IV, and Outcesticide V.

Track origins

  • Tracks 1-7 are from a demo recorded by Nirvana on 23 January 1988 at Jack Endino's Reciprocal Studios in Seattle.
  • Track 8 was recorded at Reciprocal later that year, on 11 June.
  • Tracks 9-11 come from a 4-track home recording by Kurt Cobain, and feature him exclusively on all vocals and instruments.
  • Track 12 is a KISS cover recorded for and released on a KISS cover album.
  • Track 13 was released on Nirvana's Blew EP and comes from a session at Music Source Studios in September 1989.
  • Track 14 is taken from a live performance in Leeds, England 25 October 1989.
  • Track 15 is a solo performance by Cobain at KAOS Studios in Seattle on 15 September 1990.
  • Track 16 is a Greg Sage And The Wipers cover, an outtake from a session at BBC Radio on October 1990.
  • Tracks 17-19 are taken from a session at Smart Studios in April 1990. The tracks were recorded for Nirvana's second album, but were scrapped after the band signed with Geffen Records.
  • Tracks 20 and 21 are taken from Nirvana's VPRO Radio session on 25 November 1991.
  • Track 22 is a Greg Sage And The Wipers cover, recorded in April 1992 for a cover album.
  • Track 23 is taken from a 1991 recording in Europe. The song was given, for some reason, to Iggy Pop after Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

A remastered version of Outcesticide I was released in 1996. The recording was said to be of a much higher quality than the original bootleg.
