Ted Joans (July 4, 1928 - April 25, 2003), born Theodore Jones, was an American painter, trumpeter and a jazz poet. Joans invented the outagraph, which is a surrealist photographic method in which the subject, what the photograph is "of," has been cut out.
Joans was also the originator of the "Bird Lives" legend and graffitti in New York City after the death of Charlie Parker in March 1955.
