The Ottawa Rebel was a member of the National Lacrosse League, a professional sports league in North America, since the 2000-2001 season. They played at the Corel Centre originally and then at the Ottawa Civic Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. They were the Syracuse Smash from 1997 to 2000. They became an inactive team after the 2002-2003 season. On May 5, 2005, the NLL announced that the franchise was purchased by Bruce Ubran to become the Edmonton Rush.
The Rebel was owned by the Brad Waters group which also brought lacrosse to Toronto and Montreal.
In their first season in Ottawa the Rebel went 1-13 and finished ninth out of nine. Their second season was slightly better going 4-12 but due to tie breakers they finished fourth in the Northern Division and 13th overall behind a Calgary Roughneck squad that also finished with a 4-12 record. Their third and final year in Ottawa they again finished 4-12 which placed them 4th in the Northern Division again but 10th out of 12 in the overall league standings.
As the Syracuse Smash they were last overall all three years prompting the move to the Canadian Capital.
