Ottawa County, Ohio

Ottawa County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 40,985. Its county seat is Port Clinton6 and is named either for the Ottawa Indians who lived there or for an Indian word meaning "trader".

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,515 km² (585 mi²). 660 km² (255 mi²) of it is land and 855 km² (330 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 56.43% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,985 people, 16,474 households, and 11,729 families residing in the county. The population density is 62/km² (161/mi²). There are 25,532 housing units at an average density of 39/km² (100/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.56% White, 0.65% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 3.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,474 households out of which 29.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.90% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,224, and the median income for a family is $51,919. Males have a median income of $39,823 versus $24,727 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,973. 5.90% of the population and 4.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.40% of those under the age of 18 and 5.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
