Oswegatchie, New York

Oswegatchie is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,370. The name reportedly means "Black water" in the aboriginal language.
The Town of Oswegatchie is on the northern border of the county and borders the City of Ogdensburg.

History
The town was formed in 1802 upon the formation of the county. The local native tribe was called the "Oswegatchie." The original land owner was Jacob Heuvel.
Geography
The Oswegatchie River flows through the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 184.8 km² (71.4 mi²). 170.5 km² (65.8 mi²) of it is land and 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.76% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,370 people, 1,508 households, and 1,091 families residing in the town. The population density is 25.6/km² (66.4/mi²). There are 1,896 housing units at an average density of 11.1/km² (28.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.49% White, 0.30% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,508 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $36,700, and the median income for a family is $39,459. Males have a median income of $31,096 versus $23,365 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,236. 11.6% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.8% of those under the age of 18 and 10.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
