Oranjemund

Oranjemund. Oranjemund is situated in Namibia on the north bank of the mouth of the Orange River, Oranjemund was first established in 1936 following the discovery, by Hans Merensky, of significant alluvial diamond deposits on the north bank of the Orange River and the adjacent northern coastline. Production of mainly gem quality diamonds has remained in the region of 2,000,000 carats (400 kg) per year since inception of the mine, mainly through improvements in technology.
It is a desert fairyland which you will not be able to see. It has a population of approximately 11,000 and access is restricted to workers and relatives. It exists purely for the diamond industry and even though there is a border post between South Africa and Namibia, only people with passes are allowed in. To keep the diamond workers happy in such a remote place, the town has every facility you could want with beautiful gardens, efficient services and a plentiful supply of fresh food in the shops. There is no tourist trade or through roads.
