Operation Margarethe
|
During World War II, the Germans planned two Operations Margarethe.
Margarethe I was the occupation of Hungary by Nazi forces on 12 March, 1944. The Hungarian government had been a German ally but surrendered to the Red Army in early 1944. Hitler ordered this move to recapture critical facilities and to redeem his betrayal by the Hungarians.
Margarethe II was the planned Nazi invasion of Romania if that government were to surrender to the Soviets. This plan was never executed.
