Perkins Cove, Ogunquit
Ogunquit is a town located in York County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,226. Incorporated after splitting with neighboring Wells, Maine in 1980, Ogunquit thrives on its seasonal tourism economy. Some of its popular attractions include Perkin's Cove and Ogunquit Beach. It is also conveniently located near the neighboring tourist communities of York, Maine and Kittery, Maine. Over the years, Ogunquit has gained a reputation as a popular destination for gay and lesbian tourists, with its many gay-owned and operated hotels, restaraunts, and bars. This has led to it being the butt of many crude jokes in neighboring York and Kittery.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.1 km² (4.3 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.43% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,226 people, 668 households, and 346 families residing in the town. The population density is 115.5/km² (299.0/mi²). There are 2,114 housing units at an average density of 199.1/km² (515.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.53% White, 0.49% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.33% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 668 households out of which 10.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 3.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.2% are non-families. 39.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.84 and the average family size is 2.41.

In the town the population is spread out with 10.4% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 18.0% from 25 to 44, 37.1% from 45 to 64, and 30.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 55 years. For every 100 females there are 109.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $47,727, and the median income for a family is $56,731. Males have a median income of $44,583 versus $31,528 for females. The per capita income for the town is $34,289. 4.2% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
