According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.1 km² (5.1 mi²). 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.79% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 15,503 people, 5,610 households, and 4,050 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,190.0/km² (3,084.6/mi²). There are 5,805 housing units at an average density of 445.6/km² (1,155.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.82% White, 0.48% African American, 1.09% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 9.27% from other races, and 4.04% from two or more races. 20.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,610 households out of which 37.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.20.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $39,338, and the median income for a family is $44,024. Males have a median income of $40,494 versus $24,747 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,019. 11.3% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Notes
Oakdale is home to the Oakdale Rodeo which is on the PRCA tour of Rodeos. It is also home to a Herseys chocolate factory (the only one outside Hershey, Pennsylvania).
