O'Donnell, Texas

O'Donnell is a city located in Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,011. O’Donnell is considered as a town of Lynn County, although a part extends into Dawson County and the town has residents in both counties. The town was the birthplace and boyhood home of Dan Blocker, better known as Hoss Cartwright on the television show Bonanza. There is a small museum in O'Donnell featuring some Dan Blocker memorabilia.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,011 people, 364 households, and 275 families residing in the city. The population density is 453.9/km² (1,177.5/mi²). There are 423 housing units at an average density of 189.9/km² (492.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 64.00% White, 1.09% African American, 1.09% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 31.75% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. 65.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 364 households out of which 41.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,103, and the median income for a family is $30,833. Males have a median income of $26,193 versus $15,917 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,924. 24.8% of the population and 24.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.1% of those under the age of 18 and 15.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
