Nova Friburgo is a city located in a valley surrounded by mountains in the east-central of Rio de Janeiro state. The town was established by 2,006 Swiss emigrants from the canton of Fribourg, transferred to the region by royal decree from D. João VI in 1818.

Geography
The city is 846 m (2,776 feet) above sea level and has a total area of 938.5 km² (362.4 mi²).
Demographics
There are 173,321 people, 151,820 residing in the city, and 21,501 in rural regions. The population density is 182.56/km² (472.8/mi²).
