According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.2 km² (8.6 mi²). 21.6 km² (8.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.92% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 16,238 people, 6,377 households, and 4,234 families residing in the city. The population density is 752.6/km² (1,950.3/mi²). There are 6,687 housing units at an average density of 309.9/km² (803.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.53% White, 1.95% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 3.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,377 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $37,778, and the median income for a family is $45,789. Males have a median income of $36,582 versus $22,165 for females.
