Northumbria University is located in Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. Its previous name was the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, which it used until 2002.
It has its origins in three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art & Industrial Design and the Municipal College of Commerce. An amalgamation of these three institutions formed the Newcastle Polytechnic in 1969, which became a major centre for the initial training of teachers with the incorporation of the City College of Education in 1974, and subsequently the Northern Counties College of Education in 1976. The Carlisle campus, containing only about four hundred students, was taken over by the University of Central Lancashire on August 1st 2004, which already had a campus at Penrith. This was to concentrate on the North-East. The two Cumbria campuses may become part of an eventual University of Cumbria.
It was inaugurated as a university in 1992, becoming one of the Post-1992 universities.
The student union provides extensive facilities to be inebriated chiefly at Bar One. There is a dance night called Wiggle every Saturday at Stage 1. The student newspaper is called Northumbria Student. The radio station, NSR FM, being shared with University of Newcastle upon Tyne is broadcast over the internet.
Northumbria University has a population of about 23,500 students, of whom 16,000 are full-time.
