Norrtälje Municipality is located in Stockholm County, in the easten part of central Sweden, with the town Norrtälje (pop. 16,500) as seat. Norrtälje municipality is located in the bay of Roslagen.
A lot of the houses in Norrtälje municipality are summer cottages, only inhabited during summertime. That is due to the geographical position near the archipelago which makes it a popular tourist area.
Norrtälje traces its history to 1219, when the location was first mentioned as Tälje. After some time, the name officially became Norrtälje, to separate it from the other Tälje in the province, Södertälje. The city arms were created as an upside down anchor already in 1622 when the chart was granted.
In 1719 large parts of the central town that was built in wood was burnt down by Russian plunderers. Not until 1726 was the new church (built of stone) finished, and it took another 4 years until the city hall was completed.
