Nishiumi, Ehime
|
Nishiumi (西海町; -cho) was a town located in Minamiuwa District, Ehime, Japan.
On October 1, 2004 all the towns of Minamiuwa (Johen, Misho, Nishiumi, Uchiumi, and Ipponmatsu,) merged together to form a single larger town, Ainan. This action, referred to in Japanese as gappei, has been happening more and more in Japan as these small villages annex into larger towns and cities, primarily for tax reasons.
Each of the villages retained their name as a district of the larger Ainan town. This larger town, however, is now eligible to receive more government funding, and so this decision is very appealing to many small village clusters like the ones in Minamiuwa.
As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 3,050 and a density of 139.84 persons per km². The total area was 21.81 km².
