Nisan (נִיסָן, Standard Hebrew Nisan, Tiberian Hebrew Nîsān: from Akkadian nisānu, from Sumerian nisag "First fruits") is the seventh month of the ecclesiastical year and the first month of the civil year on the Hebrew calendar. The name is Babylonian in origin; in the Bible it is called Abib, meaning spring. It is a spring month of 30 days.
It is also the month April in Turkish.
The death of Yeshua Bar-Yosef or Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe to be the Messiah, traditionally occurred at 3:00 (i.e., the ninth canonical hour) on the afternoon of 15 Nisan, the first day of Passover. The Last Supper, a Passover Seder, was held the night before on the evening of 15 Nisan.
Reminder: The Jewish day begins at sunset, not sunrise -- thus, as in the Book of Genesis, "there was evening, and there was morning" in that order. Only people who do not understand how the Jewish Calendar works claim the Christian last supper happened on the evening of 14 Nisan, when they actually mean the evening of 15 Nisan.
Holidays in Nisan
- Pesach - Nisan 15-22 (through Nisan 21 in Israel and in Samaritanism, Reform Judaism, and some other modern Jewish traditions).
- Yom HaShoah - Nisan 27
