Niland is a census-designated place located in Imperial County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,143.
Geography
Niland is located at 33°14'19" North, 115°30'50" West (33.238576, -115.513927)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Slab City, an abandoned Navy base nowadays used as a camp by mostly retired recreational vehicle owners, is located about 3 miles southwest of Niland.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,143 people, 422 households, and 281 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,076.4/km² (2,813.3/mi²). There are 530 housing units at an average density of 499.1/km² (1,304.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 54.77% White, 3.15% Black or African American, 2.01% Native American, 4.55% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 28.08% from other races, and 7.44% from two or more races. 55.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 422 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% are married couples living together, 18.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.32.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older.
