Nichols (town), New York

Nichols is a town located in Tioga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,584. The town is named after Colonel Nichols, an early landowner.

The Town of Nichols also contains a village called Nichols. The town is on the south border of the county.

History

The Town of Nichols was established in 1824. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1791. Early commerce was based on floating log rafts of goods down the river and breaking up the rafts for sale of the logs.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 89.8 km² (34.7 mi²). 87.3 km² (33.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.77% water.

The Susquehanna River is the north border of the town and the south border is Pennsylvania.

The Southern Tier Expressway (New York 17) passes across the town south of the river.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,584 people, 966 households, and 723 families residing in the town. The population density is 29.6/km² (76.7/mi²). There are 1,033 housing units at an average density of 11.8/km² (30.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.03% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 966 households out of which 35.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,372, and the median income for a family is $38,558. Males have a median income of $30,824 versus $22,375 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,728. 13.6% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Briggs Hollow -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town.
  • Hoopers Valley -- A riverside hamlet west of Waverly village on Route 17.
  • Litchfield -- A riverside hamlet at the western town line on Route 17.
  • Lounsberry -- A hamlet northeast of Waverly village on Route 17.
  • Nichols -- The Village of Nichols is on the south side of the Susquehanna River.
  • Squaw Island -- An island in the Susquehanna River in the northeast part of the town.
  • Tuffs Island -- An island in the Susquehanna River in the northeast part of the town.
