Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Newtown is a borough located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,312. It sits on the western edge of the Trenton, New Jersey metropolitan area, and can also be regarded as being part of the larger Philadelphia metropolitan area.

History

Newtown was founded by William Penn, in 1684. Newtown was one of several towns that Penn had organized around Philadelphia, PA to provide country homes for city residents, and to support farming communities.

Geography

Newtown is located at 40°13'42" North, 74°55'56" West (40.228208, -74.932338)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

The Newtown Creek, a tributary of the Neshaminy Creek, runs North to South through the center of town.

Education

Newtown is in the Council Rock School District. While the district serves many towns in Lower Bucks County, Newtown is home to Council Rock High School North, Newtown Junior High School, Goodnoe Elementary School, and the former Chancellor Street School, which now acts as the administrative building for the district. Private schools in the area include the George School, Newtown Friends School, and St. Andrews Catholic School. The township is also the site of Bucks County Community College's main campus.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,312 people, 920 households, and 595 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,623.0/km² (4,201.6/mi²). There are 936 housing units at an average density of 657.1/km² (1,701.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 96.93% White, 1.12% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 920 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the borough the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.0 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $63,571, and the median income for a family is $78,215. Males have a median income of $54,231 versus $37,283 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $33,500. 3.4% of the population and 0.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Trivia

  • The Law School Admissions Council is headquartered there. As a result, most American lawyers have heard of Newtown.
  • The movie Signs, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, was partially filmed in Newtown. Specifically, a scene was shot in the Newtown Book and Record Exchange, a small store on Newtown's scenic State Street.
