Newton Township is a township located in Calhoun County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,493.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 94.0 km² (36.3 mi²). 93.1 km² (35.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.96% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,493 people, 1,017 households, and 768 families residing in the township. The population density is 26.8/km² (69.4/mi²). There are 1,077 housing units at an average density of 11.6/km² (30.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.11% White, 0.40% African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,017 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.5% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.3 males.
