Newport, Oregon

Newport is a city located in Lincoln County, Oregon. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,532, a growth of nearly 13% over its 1990 population.
Newport is the county seat of Lincoln CountyTemplate:GR. It is also the home of the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Yaquina Head Lighthouse.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27 km² (10.4 mi²). 23 km² (8.9 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1.6 mi² or 14.94%) of it is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 9,532 people in the city, organized into 4,112 households and 2,495 families. The population density is 414.5/km² (1,073.1/mi²). There are 5,034 housing units at an average density of 218.9/km² (566.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.56% White, 2.15% Native American, 1.72% Asian, 0.45% Black or African American, and 0.21% Pacific Islander. 3.86% were of other races, and 3.04% from two or more races. 8.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,112 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.77.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $31,996, and the median income for a family is $36,682. Males have a median income of $31,416 versus $26,582 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,580. 14.4% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.1% of those under the age of 18 and 8.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
