Although clubs with similar names have existed starting with Newcastle KB United in 1978, the present club was founded in 2000 and played in the National Soccer League until that league disbanded in 2004.
The club will resume play in the newly-formed A-League in 2005, under a new name, Newcastle United Jets, referring to the fact that Newcastle is home to a Air Force base.
Former England and Australia manager Terry Venables was to become the teams' technical director, with former Marconi coach Jean-Paul de Marigny to coach the side, and Garry Van Egmond to be his assistant. However, Venables's agent has announced that he has not signed any deal to take up a job with the club, and will not take up a job with the club, due to his many commitments in the UK.
The club recently surprised many in the Australian football community by signing Ned Zelic, a player who was seen to have severed connections with Australia
