The station is the first in the Metrorail system to be built with a mix of public and private funds. According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the project was budgeted at $90 million. The District contributed $40 million, the federal government $25 million, and a private partnership provided the remaining $25 million. The final cost was $103.7 million. While still under construction in early 2004, the station name was changed from New York Ave to New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U. The station was also paid for by XM Radio whose headquarters are roughly a block away.
