New London, Texas

New London is a city located in Rusk County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 987.

On March 18, 1937, the New London School explosion killed three hundred people (most were children). This event led to the legal requirement in the United States that natural gas, which is normally odorless, be given an identifying smell.

New London was originally known as just "London". However, as the US Post Office had already established a station at London, Texas, the town changed its name to "New London" in 1931.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.4 km² (8.6 mi²). 22.4 km² (8.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.12% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 987 people, 352 households, and 268 families residing in the city. The population density is 44.1/km² (114.3/mi²). There are 388 housing units at an average density of 17.3/km² (44.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.59% White, 4.86% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.33% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 4.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 352 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,984, and the median income for a family is $36,979. Males have a median income of $27,981 versus $15,313 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,009. 16.3% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
