Naomi (נָעֳמִי "Beautiful; agreeable", Standard Hebrew Noʿomi, Tiberian Hebrew Noʿŏmî) is Ruth's mother in law in the Old Testament Book of Ruth. She later renamed herself Mara. (Ruth 1:20-21): "She said to them, 'Do not call me Naomi call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.'" (Revised Standard Version) Mara is a Hebrew name that means "bitter". Through Ruth's marriage to Boaz she becomes an ancestor of King David.
