Nagaoka, Niigata

Nagaoka (長岡市; -shi) is a city located in Niigata, Japan. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 194,327 and a density of 740.43 persons per km². The total area is 262.45 km².
It is located in the centre of the prefecture and the surrounding Chuetsu region. The Shinano River flows through it from north to south.
During the Edo period it was the capital of Nagaoka-han. Nagaoka Castle dates from this period.
The modern city was founded on April 1, 1906. It is the second largest city in the prefecture after the capital, Niigata.
Nagaoka is the birthplace of Isoroku Yamamoto.
