NMCI stands for Navy Marine Corps Intranet. NMCI is an effort to coordinate NIPRNET access and access to Command and Control systems on a standard, fault tolerant network. Currently, NMCI is being phased in by EDS.
Among the benefits offered by NMCI to its subscribers:
- Data encryption for sensitive documents such as e-mail
- Remote access to productivity software such as Microsoft Office
As of September 2004, the Director, NMCI, is Rear Admiral (upper half) James Godwin.
NMCI has been mired in controversy (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A2854-2004Jun24) from its beginnings. Common criticisms include spotty network connectivity and sheer difficulty of use.
