NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award

The National Basketball Association's Defensive Player of the Year Award has been handed out since 1983. The winner is selected by a panel of 125 sportswriters, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points; a second place vote is worth three points; and each third-place vote is worth one point. The player with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award.

In 2004-05, Ben Wallace of the Detroit Pistons won the award with 339 points. Bruce Bowen of the San Antonio Spurs finished second with 247 points, and the Denver Nuggets' Marcus Camby finished third with 168 points.

The bearded Eaton was one of the most distinctive figures in the NBA during the era of the 1980's.
